Gravel to concrete no more ruts and washouts

Gravel driveways rut, wash out in heavy rain and track stones into the garage. Converting to concrete gives you a solid, clean drive that does not need regrading every year.

Sound familiar?

Signs it is time

  • Ruts and potholes after every storm
  • Gravel washing into the yard or street
  • Stones in the garage and on the lawn
  • Regrading or topping up every year

Using what is there

An existing gravel drive is not wasted. Where the gravel is clean and well packed, it can be regraded and used as part of the base. Where it has mixed with mud or clay, it comes out and new base goes in.

How the conversion goes

  1. Grade the drive to the right height and slope.
  2. Rebuild and compact the base.
  3. Set forms and reinforcement.
  4. Pour, finish and cut control joints.
  5. Let it cure before traffic.

Drainage

Gravel lets water soak through. Concrete sheds it. Part of planning a conversion is deciding where that runoff goes so it does not end up at the garage door or in a neighbor's yard.

Questions we hear

Frequently asked

Can you pour concrete over my gravel?

Only where the gravel is clean, compacted and at the right grade. Muddy or mixed gravel is removed first.

Concrete or asphalt?

Both are options. Compare concrete and asphalt.
