Concrete answers
Can cracked concrete be resurfaced?
The short answer
Sometimes. Hairline cracks in a stable, level slab can be repaired and covered by resurfacing. Wide cracks, cracks that are still moving, and slabs that have sunk or heaved will usually show back through a new surface, so those need repair, leveling or replacement first.
Good candidates
- Hairline or narrow cracks that have not moved.
- A level slab still in one piece.
- Surface wear, pitting, light flaking or stains.
Poor candidates
- Cracks with one side higher than the other.
- Cracks that have widened over time.
- Sunken, heaved or broken sections.
- Concrete crumbling through its depth.
Why it matters
A resurfacing layer is thin and bonded to the slab below. When the slab moves, the overlay moves with it and cracks in the same place. Fixing the slab first is what makes resurfacing last.
This page is general information. Every slab and every yard is different, so the right answer for your concrete comes from looking at it in person.
