Driveway aprons where the wear starts

The apron is the part of the driveway that meets the street or the garage. Every vehicle crosses it, often while turning, so it is usually the first place a driveway breaks down.

Apron problems we see

  • Broken concrete where the drive meets the street
  • A dropped section at the garage door
  • Edges crumbling where tires turn in
  • A bump or lip that scrapes low vehicles

Why aprons fail first

Turning tires twist the slab, water collects at the curb or garage, and the edge of the apron often has less support than the middle of the drive. A properly built apron is thick enough for the load and sits on a well-compacted base.

Garage aprons

At the garage, the apron should drop slightly away from the door so rain does not run inside, and meet the garage slab cleanly with a joint between them.

Street aprons

Where the driveway meets the street, the work may touch the public right-of-way. Some cities, Tyler included, have their own requirements for driveway approaches. What to check before work at the street.

Questions we hear

Frequently asked

Can you replace just the apron?

Usually yes. The apron is cut out at a joint, the base is rebuilt and a new apron is poured.

Why does my apron crack and the rest of the drive does not?

It takes the turning loads and often sits where water collects. Extra thickness and a solid base help.
