Concrete answers
Should I repair or replace my concrete driveway?
The short answer
Repair it if the damage is limited: a few cracks, a broken edge, one or two failed panels, or a sound slab with a worn surface. Replace it if most panels are broken, several sections have heaved or sunk, or the base under it has washed out.
Usually repairable
- Narrow cracks in an otherwise stable slab: crack repair.
- A panel that has dropped but is still whole: leveling.
- One or two broken panels: section replacement.
- A worn, pitted or stained surface on a sound slab: resurfacing.
Usually time to replace
- Cracks running across most of the panels.
- Many sections at different heights.
- Large areas of crumbling concrete.
- Base washed out under several panels.
- Repairs that keep failing.
The question to ask
Why did it fail? If the cause is local, like a downspout, a root or a heavy truck at one spot, fix that and repair the damage. If the cause is everywhere, like a thin slab or a poor base, repairs just move the problem around.
This page is general information. Every slab and every yard is different, so the right answer for your concrete comes from looking at it in person.
